Structure for EE 2 Released
Okay, for all of you who said you were waiting for Structure to support EE 2 before making the switch…excuse time is over.
Today Travis and Jack announced the release of Structure for EE 2.

You can see screenshots of the new Structure on their website. The price remains at $65 and the download will support both EE 2 and EE 1.6. Existing Structure license holders can download Structure for EE 2 for free for that license (new sites would require, of course, a new license).
The download comes with two directories (ee1 and ee2) along with some instructions for adding in a temporary hack pending the release of EE 2.1.
There is also a warning about upgrading your EE 1.6 site running Structure to EE 2: don’t do it yet. You should wait until the Structure guys have had more time to test the upgrade process. This shouldn’t be a problem, however, because I suspect most people are building new sites in EE 2 and not upgrading old ones.
If you have an EE 1.6 site running Structure and you would like to help Travis and Jack test the upgrade process, please get in touch with them. They want to make sure the upgrade from EE 1.6 to EE 2 is safe and smooth.
Congrats to Team Structure on the huge launch!

their pricing structure seems really bizarre and high. Considering there are now strong equivalents to this product for half this price and some for free??? Will their sales see a dent and a price drop?
Ryan Irelan — 08:20 on 06.28.2010
There is one price and it’s been the same since the module became available commercially, so it’s not really a structure.
What are the strong equivalents you’re referring to?

Taxonomy may be one that Neil is referring to.

structure is worth the price. one of the best add-on out there.

Thanks Scissors! True there are a few players out there, but Structure has been around the longest and is the most robust module of it’s kind. We also have a pile of awesome new features slated for this year, so hang on to your seats!

Hi John,
No disrespect to Taxonomy but Structure is *the* standard when it comes to this approach. I find it integral to the majority of projects we are involved in and I look forward to new features.
PS. Ryan, was that line about excuses aimed at me?

Hey guys,
To those who know Structure well and use it, can I ask whether it takes away any useful functionality in the control panel? For instance, because it “forgoes the current template_group/template setup” does it still mean templates are set as usual and entries can be added to channels in the same way? And it mainly makes creating and managing “Pages” easier?
Thanks for any insight!
Mark
Jack McDade — 14:58 on 06.29.2010
That’s correct! You can go “unmanaged” and do anything the normal way you like. It just gives you the ability to layer on structured page hierarchies in a super client-friendly manner. I’ve built corporate sites in under 2 hours with with.
Mark Wu — 15:07 on 06.29.2010
Thanks Jack. Does that mean you yourself use the CP in the normal way, but layer on Structure’s functionality so that your clients find it super-easy to find pages and edit them?
Jack McDade — 15:19 on 06.29.2010
More or less yes. I use the Structure CP to build out pages fast. Though, unlike a client, i will use “Publish” and “Edit” from time to time, especially when posting lots of entries to a listing or something of that nature. It’s just so crazy easy to reorder and reorganize your nav, make page tweaks, etc.
Does that help?
Mark Wu — 15:30 on 06.29.2010
Yes thanks Jack!

Apologies - and don’t get me wrong i do understand that Structure is quite extensive in its features, and with new ones coming sounds suitable. However, “I” do feel the pricing to be quite high (just expressing a personal opinion). Comparable systems might not offer everything it does, but for fresh and new modules they get close and i imagine they will keep improving:

I think you’re missing the point of what structure is as building a navigation system plays just one of many roles.
Merne — 11:53 on 10.01.2010
When you think about the development time needed to NOT use structure, its well worth the price.

I’d say that the plugin isn’t worth the price. We’ve been working with Structure since 1.x (when it was free) and now that it’s “commercial,” the support is TERRIBLE. Travis keeps breaking things with every new update and then it takes him weeks (or longer!) to fix things. Especially now that the price tag is $65. I love the concept of Structure, but when a new version comes out and things break, I have clients calling and yelling at me. Not cool!
