Structure 2 Released

Structure 2 has been released.  Never heard of Structure? Here’s more:

Structure is a different way to build ExpressionEngine sites. It forgoes the current template_group/template setup and creates “static” and “listing” pages that are all editable through a tree sitemap view. Now, traditional page style content and multiple entry pages can live within the same area. Your clients & authors will rejoice.

Structure 2 costs $65 and is a major upgrade from the previous version. Huge congratulations to Travis and his team on getting this out.

We here at EE Insider know many of you use it, as it’s one of the more popular add-ons. But this commentator doesn’t quite yet understand it (having drank the template/template_group kool-aid). Please share how you use it in the comments!

As I see it, Structure’s primary benefit isn’t for the developer, but for the client because it makes it much easier and more intuitive for them to manage their content and site structure (as opposed to using the “Edit” tab and the search form to find and manage the pages).

That being said, I find that Structure makes the most sense for a particular kind of site, one that relies largely on a “static” or predominantly hierarchical site structure.

If the site is something that’s more “dynamic”, such as your typical blog or news site, than I don’t think Structure really makes sense because such a site doesn’t rely on a hierarchical site structure for its content structure.
IMHO, Structure is one of the most important and valuable add-ons for EE, and I’m very happy to see its continued support and development.

Anyone else have any comments on this?

I too am a bit mystified.  Why not just use the Pages module for the static elements?

Jason Morehead08:37 on 11.09.2009

You can certainly use the Pages module to manage static elements, but one of the nice things about Structure is that you can easily reorder the pages and sub-pages via drag and drop and the navigation automatically updates itself (if you’re using the Structure tags to generate your site navigation).

Site navigation generation in the hands of your customers… that was my idea for it until i found my page titles too long! And then went for navigator instead.
Structure 2.0 might be better - but not for $65 in my eyes, maybe $30…

I really loved working with structure so far and found it very intuitive. I don’t know though whether AU$ 65 are justified? I guess having a bunch of new features and support makes up for it.
