EllisLab have updated the blog with their SXSW plans:
Over the course of the last few years we have gradually changed our approach to SXSW, preferring to move toward a small-group discussion format.
This is a great move for EllisLab and for the community; there is an immeasurable value to this discourse. This year we are excited to continue with this format and to add to it; this year, you, through the services at UserVoice, will have the opportunity to choose where we meet and what we discuss.
First we will be offering Lunch with EllisLab to exceptional contributors to the community, including those who run ExpressionEngine or CodeIgniter community sites, third party add-on developers, and Pro Net members. This is your opportunity to tell us what we can do to support your endeavor while enjoying a meal on our tab
The ‘Labs have so much in store that if you’re going to Austin this year, it’s a must read.
Along with the launch of his new company and website, Brandon Kelly has also snuck in a nice little surprise: Wygwam 2.0. The updated WYSIWYG editor for EE now works on both EE 1.6.x and EE 2.x. In addition, it also got a new set of threads:
We went back to the drawing board for Wygwam’s custom CKEditor skin, and came up with something that does a better job of blending into your ExpressionEngine control panel, allowing you to focus on That Which Matters Most – your content.
For those of you that are already using EE 2, Wygwam 2.0 is a free upgrade for existing license holders.
As a part of the ongoing excellence that is EE/CI 2010, Robert and the game at Solspace have added the code-sharing corner.
What, you may ask, is the Codeshare Corner?
Amidst the throng of activity at EECI2010 San Francisco, the Code Share Corner (CSC) will be an oasis of calm and enlightenment for exhibitors and attendees to exchange code and ideas, connect with others, and discuss business.
This will be a comfortable lounge where you can sit and relax, grab a cup of coffee, and empty your mind. This innovative space will be powered by Solspace, the main exhibitor at CSC.
As always there are more details on the EE/CI site.
Nerds rejoice! No word yet on whether Paul Burdick of Solspace will tell you you’re a horrible PHP programmer for a fee or for free yet.
Our weekly EE Help Chat takes place tonight at 9 PM Eastern (GMT -5) and you’re invited! If you’re new to EE, a long-time expert or user, please join us for the one-hour chat session where we help each other EE questions and problems. There is no admission fee; it’s free for everyone!
Want to learn more about the EE Help Chat? Visit our EE Help Chat page to read up on all of the details or read transcripts from select past chats (select meaning when I remembered to post the transcript).
Natural Logic has written a fantastic post about the Geofinder add-on and location awareness.
I’ve been planning on adding location awareness handling to Geofinder for some time and recently did just that.
For this post, we will focus on using the iPhone to implement this functionality, but it can certainly be used for other webkit based mobile browsers. I use the Geofinder Music Venue demo as our example.
The post provides examples and shows the excellent end results. Geolocation and the Internet are the FUTURE!
EllisLab recently updated their blog with travel plans. Yes, 3 of the finest people from EllisLab will be in Austin for the big geekfest. They’re also allowing some flexibility in their activities:
We have some exciting plans for this year’s SXSW, including the ability for those attending SXSW to influence our schedule. This is the first time that we will offer the community the chance to have a say in where we are, and what we discuss; we’re excited to make this an EllisLab event for you, the community.
No word yet if Derek Jones will run customer service for your add-on while in Austin.
EllisLab will also be attending Ryan and I’s glorious panel: ExpressionEngine 2.0: Total Domination. Yes, the title is as corny as your partially hydrogenated food, but the content will be delightful. The speakers include Ryan, Myself, Mark Huot, Brian Warren and Jenn Lukas. 4 illustrious EE speakers who know there way around the engine, and one man who will surely embarrass himself in some way. It’s the EE event of the season before the EE event of the season.
Congratulations to Derek on this release, and also a thank you for that lovely accessory tab next to yours in that screenshot (our own accessory, which you can have for yourself here).

In this episode, we respond to a popular reader question: what’s the best way to handle dynamically sizing images and general best practices? We answer that question, and talk about the built-in management tools, while highlighting a few of the add-ons available in both EE 1.6.x and EE 2.0 to handle and manage images.
Forty, a marketing agency out of Arizona, took on the job of re- designing and developing Senator John McCain’s 2010 senate re-election campaign website. They chose ExpressionEngine as the backend for the site.
In a detailed write-up on their site, they give you a behind-the-scenes look into their process of brainstorming and designing. At the end of the write-up, they drop this little nugget of information:
The entire site was built in HTML 5, the next major revision of HTML, and implemented in the Expression Engine content management system.
Famed ExpressionEngine events site, Devot:ee, has written another article spotlighting developer Andrew Gunstone.
Andrew Gunstone is an ExpressionEngine web and add-on developer and the Technical Director of Thirst Studios, based near Melbourne, Australia. He recently released his first add-on, SC Publish Redirect, and has many more promising add-ons on the way. His example of developing add-ons to fit development needs is an inspiration to web developers who have a need not filled by current offerings, and we look forward to what he has coming up!
Andrew has done some very nice work with EE and uses a ton of add-ons. It’s a great interview, well worth your time. We still haven’t gotten the call for our exclusive interview, Mr. Masuga.
I’ve been working on a site which users must register to gain access. I’ve removed the need for a user to create a unqiue username by using their email address for their username. This also removes the need for the email field on the registration form.
However, the screen name, which I’m currently using to welcome the user to the site in a personal fashion, has to also be unique. Luckily the verification for unique screen names can be removed, so John Smith doesn’t have to call himself JSmith79 just to be able to register.
Yesterday Erik Reagan posed a question on Twitter about using EE add-ons that require a core hack (making modifications to the EE code itself). It’s a great question so I want to ask the EE Insider community.
Would you or do you use add-ons that require core hacks?
The very useful Markdown Extra plugin has been updated. Here are the changes:
I’ve updated the markdown plugin with “Markdown Extra 1.2.4”—the latest version—and added a fix for block quotes. Every feature I’ve testing is working including blockquotes, tables, definition lists, images and links by reference, and all the basic stuff (of course).
This plugin is not compatible with EE2 (or hasn’t been tested at least). Someone get Joe a copy of it so he can update it!
