Referencing Custom Field Names

Emily, take a look at the great Template Variables accessory, which allows you to see all of your custom fields, snippets and global variables (with click and copy). Or you might want to try Simple Custom Feelds (but I haven’t used it before).

Something else that would help is using strict naming conventions like cf_channel_customfield, etc.

Note that in larger sites, the Template Variables add-on can add significant page load time in the CP. We were dealing with a client with CP speed complaints and disabling all accessories, especially this one, made it appreciably faster.
