New Screencast Series: EE Techniques

Last night I released a new screencast series called ExpressionEngine Techniques. Here’s what I wrote about it over on the EE Screencasts website:

The series starts off with two screencasts: Search Engine Optimization and Pulling in External Content.

In the Search Engine Optimization video tutorial, I cover some simple steps to optimize your EE-powered website for search engines using only the tools that come with ExpressionEngine.

In the Pulling in External Content video, I demonstrate how to display content from RSS feeds, as well as import the content as entries into your ExpressionEngine website.

The episodes in this series are stand-alone and each one will address a different technique you can use when developing your site with ExpressionEngine.

If you have any feedback or want to see a certain topic covered in a future episode of the series, please leave a comment or email me!

Ryan:

Thanks for these new ones. I bought them. I will watch them soon - I hope they are as good as in the past.

As soon as you get more, I will buy them. As soon as your book comes out, I will acquire it.

Hi there!

I bought them, too and already watched them: Great work!
Ryan, do you have some kind of a “roadmap” for your screencasts, so we know, what’s going on?
If not, can you tell us, when you’ll release the next screencasts?

Thanks again!

Hey Ryan!

I love your Screencasts. I changed the way work and build my websites with EE.

Keep them coming and I’ll keep buying!

Thanks for the great information you bring to EE learners like me!

Thanks, David and Toby. Feel free to send me any topics you’d like to see covered.

Ryan:

Possible topics for your screencasts:

1) Templates for Wiki, discussion forum, and gallery:

Explain how to install fresh templates for gallery, wiki, and discussion forum. Recall how you deleted EE templates and installed your own templates in screencast episode #1. I want to be able to trash the templates that come with these 3 modules as we did with EE templates. You could make three screencasts, one for each module.

2) Login and register templates:
You could also make one screencast to cover login and register templates.

I totally agree with Tony! I would really appreciate those! Mentioned with this, templating the member site would also be great.

I also would like to dive into creating EE modules/pluigns/extensions, this really would be great!

One more special thing I miss are screencasts covering e.g. complex SQL queries with EE syntax (exp:query tag and $DB class): Inserting and pulling data from multible tables (maybe with linked tables).

Thanks Tony and Toby for the suggestions! I’ve written these down to be included in the list of possible future episodes.

Thanks! I’m looking forward to your next screencasts smile

The new sceencasts are good as gold!

One technical question though—There seems to be a problem in combining the items loop of the magpie plugin with the switch statement for formatting e.g. odd even lines—is there a way around this?

Ryan Irelan07:25 on 03.28.2009

Thanks, icebreaker.

The switch parameter isn’t supported by default in the Magpie plugin, but this forum post looks like it has a couple of solutions that would work for you.
