Installing and Upgrading to EE 2
When I released my new ExpressionEngine training videos last week, I also included a free installation video that walks through getting up and running with ExpressionEngine 2, including requirements, setting permissions and other considerations.
The video runs about 15 minutes and is just shy of a 40 MB download. New to ExpressionEngine and want a quick primer on installing EE? Download the video now.
Now if you’re already using EE 1.6 and want to upgrade to EE 2, I shared some information in my EECI 2010 (in San Francisco) talk about the upgrade process. The slides are available to everyone to read and learn from.
But if you’re interested in watching me give the talk, last week the talk was posted to the conference website but it’s limited to those who attended or purchased the DVD.
I have 2 invites to complete access to the EECI videos (of nearly every session) and I am going to give them away to two random commenters on this blog entry. In order to win you have to list something you love about EE 2 and something you wish it had. I’ll pick the two winners on Friday morning Eastern Time USA.
Don’t forget to leave a comment. Good luck!

Hey Ryan, the best thing about EE is how less I no worry about my clients messing up their site when I hand it over to them. I worry about security with EE much less than now than when I was building with Wordpress.
I wish EE had more forums and more support places rather than just the EE’s official forums. I know there is a chat room and EE insider and podcast. But the more the merrier, I think. And, it would definitely bring more add-ons to the community as well.

Best thing about EE 2.0 is that I don’t need 90% of the extensions I’ve been using for 1.6.x, which were mainly there to improve the editing and workflow experience for my clients. EE 2.0 control panel is a better user experience right out of the box.

The new customization options for the publish panels are awesome, for me probably the best addition.
A better way to manager custom field and it would have been near to perfection.

My favourite thing about EE 2.0 is the beautiful revamped interface. I think they have hit the nail on the head with that one. Some people don’t like the pink but then again, some people are just picky

The best thing about EE 2 is that it appears to be a better platform for developers, and I think this is one big reason we’re seeing EE evolve into a proper ecosystem.
I’m disappointed that EE 2 has not improved on EE 1’s formerly best-in-class member management, which is beginning to show its age.

Although I haven’t upgraded to 2.x yet, the example site/theme (Agile Records) seems like a great way to learn the basics of EE.
My understanding is that 2.x still doesn’t allow for easy theme switching.

What I love about EE2: the inclusion of CI which ensures a flexible, powerful and predictable long-term growth path for both developers and clients.
What I (desperately) wish EE2 had: rock-solid, feature-rich SAEF tools and support.

Love the new interface design and the file management system.
I wish I could use solspace

I love the new fieldtypes API!
I hate that you can’t use 3rd part fieldtypes in SAEFs.

My favorite thing about EE2 is the ability to customize the publish screen for clients, moving things they will never need to see out of the way and resizing and moving fields to fit the type of content clients need to enter.
I wish there was a simple WYSIWYG built in. Not for adding images or positioning elements. I’d like it to simply create unordered lists, make bold text bold, etc. while hiding the HTML code from the publish field.

My favorite thing about EE2 that it is capable of supporting any information scheme or site design I can think up. I have yet to run into any problems managing the content on my sites and delivering it in a way that is simple and clear.
I wish the installation and upkeep was more of a one button affair. Same with switching between local development and online development. There are plugins that help with this, but I’d like a simpler solution.

I love EE2’s ability to rearrange the layout of the Publish page, and that it’s not just limited to the custom fields, but covers anything on other tabs as well.
I wish EE2 had nested weblogs and templates (deeper than just template-group/template).

Lots of great thoughts and ideas, everyone!
Congrats to MJ and Tae! They were randomly selected and won the access to the EECI videos.

Whoa! This is the first time I have been randomly selected to win! Thanks a lot Ryan!

I wish EE2 had a clone section option.
