Sequel Pro

Sequel Pro iconA recent post on Daring Fireball reminded of an app I’ve been using regularly for the last few months: Sequel Pro, a free MySQL management application for Mac OS X. I’ve previously used CocoaMySQL—which has been abandoned and turned into Sequel Pro—and before that YourSQL. YourSQL stopped working for me on Leopard, so I ditched it. Sequel Pro is a nice step forward.

If you’ve read my article on developing ExpressionEngine websites locally you might find this tip handy for using Sequel Pro with MAMP.

  • Create a new favorite called “MAMP.”
  • Set “Host” to “localhost” and fill in your MySQL username and password (by default MAMP uses “root” for both).
  • Set “Socket” to /Applications/MAMP/tmp/mysql/mysql.sock

Now when you connect, you’ll be using the MySQL server from MAMP.

Excellent, and thanks for the setup tips.

Despite trying a few different standalone MySQL apps (including Sequel Pro, apparently, although I don’t remember it), I still keep going back to PHPMyAdmin. I think the familiarity and ease-of-use make it the quickest solution for me - plus I can get at it on my live site remotely.

I found this a while ago and i think it blows Sequel Pro out of the water! It supports automatic backups as well!

Thanks Ryan - your socket tip just helped me get this sorted. Previously I’d just been getting an error. Will be checking out Jason’s recommendation a little later too.
