Adding Disqus Comments to ExpressionEngine
Tony Geer walks you through how to implement the Disqus commenting system on your ExpressionEngine site.
Disqus is a service that allows you to easily and quickly add comments to your site that include ratings, threading and sorting. But the real gem is that in addition to allowing users to enter their names and email addresses to comment, they can also log in with popular social networking site accounts like Facebook and Twitter, as well as Google, OpenID and Yahoo accounts, and it’s all controlled by a powerful and beautiful user interface.
I haven’t used Disqus before but it has become very, very popular. Even the EllisLab blog is running it now.
Anyone else out there use it on EE? If so, what’s the advantage of using it over the native EE comment module?

I find that when a client has a relatively high-profile site, the use of Disqus really takes the burden of spam-filtering and comment approval off of their team. We used it on http://playingforchange.org and it has really come in handy, given the international visits, the need for social media integration, etc.

I’ve used Disqus on a few sites, eg - http://www.beanieswholefoods.co.uk/blog/how_to_make_a_vegetarian_diet_healthy_-_nutrition_advice_from_wise_choice/
I really liked it.
It’s very quick and easy to install, not impossible to re-skin either, and builds in a good level of anti-spam protection as well as easy integration with social networks etc.
The downsides are that you can’t pull comments into other templates eg most recently comments posts or sorting posts by number of comments.

As a blog reader, I pretty much detest disqus. Oh, it sounds nice but it’s a basically a consolidated place that links all of your comments everywhere on the web. Kind of creepy.
Also, it tends to make pages load really slowly, sometimes it doesn’t load at all.
I’m not finding much of a problem with comment spam since I installed Askimet & managing some pretty intense blacklists.

I have just started using Disqus and love it. I actually just posted a script on the EE Forums http://t.co/4TLhhYG that will sync Disqus with EE by turning Disqus comments into EE Comments.

There is no doubt about the popularity of Disqus. It is widely used on many reputed site/portals. They store all the comments on their own database. I haven’t used Disqus on any of my blog as the comments are not index-able and crawl-able by Google or any other search engines. So it won’t help your SEO efforts. but yes it’ll surely help you to prevent spam comments.

Actually, if you check devotee for Disquss there are addons that will sync your disqus comments into ee comments. Then you can use them for SEO and however else you want

Thanks Marc, I’ll have to work out on it. If it keeps comment text on the original blog page then it’s good. Google likes the page which get frequently updated.
