Behind the Scenes of the EE Podcast

For those that like to nerd out about gear:
I use Backpack to plan the podcast topics, Sound Studio to record (and ProTools to edit) my own audio and we use Skype to hear each other.
My mic is a Shure SM7B mounted on a Heil boom arm, which is attached to the wall next to my desk. It is routed through a Joe Meek ThreeQ and fed into my computer using an M-Audio USB box.

The podcast does sound great. It’s always good to learn what kind of gear someone’s using to produce results like that. May I ask, though, why did you choose to use the ThreeQ as a pre-amplifier rather than an M-Audio product which also comes with its own pre-amps?
Also, have you gone so far as to install any sound-deadening panels or other soundproofing materials in your workspace, or do you take out noise using Pro Tools?

Dan recommended the ThreeQ to me as a better sounding preamp than what is built in to the M-Audio. It also has nice compression and EQ that I use to get the vocal sound as rich as possible before ever being recorded. I don’t use the M-Audio preamp at all—-the level is turned to 0.
I haven’t done any sound-proofing here. I live in a mostly quiet neighborhood and it’s just me and my wife, so I can close my office door and have enough quiet to record. Dan has been using some soundproofing.

In the photo it looks like Dan uses a Joemeek ThreeQ Trackpack Microphone Pack, which bundles a ThreeQ with a JM47a microphone and shock mount, a pop filter, microphone cable, and a padded carrying case—which on Amazon sell for just $40 more than the ThreeQ itself.
Have I got that right? How does Dan like his mic? To be honest, his voice sounds better than yours but that may also be a function of the fact that some guys’ voices sound better than others.
Why did you decide to spring for the Shure SM7B and Heil arm? Or did you have that stuff already?

Oops, never mind. I found the Hivelogic Podcasting Equipment Guide (2009) where Dan discusses his gear recommendations.
