I still can’t believe that after all the testing that went on, that there is still this persistent error where entries will be out of order once modified on the Edit page (a known bug that is in the repair queue…).  That seems like an obvious one that should have been fixed right away.

Second would be the forced tags that occur when using custom fields and drop down menus.  This wasn’t the behavior in 1.6.8 and is putting my full transition to 2.0 off for the foreseeable future.

Other than that, I love the new CP and the instant search when looking for entries (especially useful since they aren’t listed in order!)

The need of Zend Optimizer turned me off. Maybe it’s my lack of apache config etc skills.. I couldn’t get the Optimizer to work properly, so no EE2 hands-on for me

Kenny Meyers09:50 on 12.29.2009

@Monkeytail

That’s what’s needed for the trial, the for-pay versions don’t have any need for Zend Optimizer at all.

Paul Frost10:59 on 12.29.2009

Like Jim, I can’t believe the amount of bugs I am coming across. I expected to come across 1 or 2, and only then if I was doing something that was pushing at the edges.

I had such high expectations of a more user friendly interface and workflow.
The new File Manager looked like it would solve all those problems with adding images to content. The result, is a far worse experience than in 1.6

Ryan11:48 on 12.29.2009

@Kenny @Monkeytail

I purchased a full version but tried to install the trial and found the whole experience quite cumbersome. I am startled that this IS their chosen solution and entry point solution for new users. I have read their justification on the forum, but that won’t change the user experience or perception of frustrated new users with Zend issues.

I was quite skeptical when they said they were going to drop the ‘core’ version, but was hopeful that their secret solution would be better. This is better so long as you don’t have to do anything, if you’re running your own server, or your host has configured it with Zend.

I’ve still not gotten the stupid Zend Optimizer configured correctly - even though the paths are set and the file configed in my php.ini, the optimizer doesn’t register as being on.

At first I thought it was because I was using the Marc Liyanage php (I need gd lib and it seems faster) because php_info claims Zend’s built-in, but that’s not working with 2.0 either.

Maybe a walk-through is in order…

hermanobrother16:55 on 12.29.2009

I use EE daily at work and for pleasure, but I haven’t gotten into 2.0

The obfuscated code has made me hate it.

: )

trif3cta17:15 on 12.29.2009

I’m digging it but there are two major things I’m missing:

Structure & WYGWAM

Other than that, so far so good. A few bugs but no deal-killers.

bjorn00:48 on 12.30.2009

As mentioned by others the Zend Optimizer & obfuscated code is for the trial only, so stop beating a dead horse already people tongue laugh

I love developing on EE 2.0. Just hope they will be quick with getting all the previously available hooks in there (they have removed some).

I have found and reported some bugs as well, EllisLab seems to be on top of it, at least that’s my experience so far ...

Another Jim00:58 on 12.30.2009

Hey bjorn - some of us may have missed that tidbit of information, so if it’s stopping me from evaluating the software, and the installation wizard makes no mention of this, I’ll beat that drum if I want to. Believe me, there’s no bigger fan of Ellis Labs and EE than me - so suck it up and deal with the annoyancr, as we have had to.

Ahem - besides, it’s more about Zend and the voodoo of maintaining one’s own server. Development, development…

bluedreamer04:00 on 12.30.2009

There are loads of commercial scripts that use Zend, even on “full” versions, but most of these also offer Ioncube alternatives for when Zend isn’t available. From a customer point of view I think if Ellislab offered a choice of versions that would be a step in the right direction.

As far as using EE2.0 goes it’s only when you start using it that you start to notice all the “small” improvements that do in fact make life a lot easier. For me the big winner so far is the main flyout navigation - this is fantastic when working on templates because I can get directly to the template I want in one click.

Paul Frost06:38 on 12.30.2009

I do like a lot of the presentation of the CP, but with my slow connection (700kbps) the loading time and then waiting for the JS to kick in is getting annoying.
It is taking 6-10 seconds to load an edit entry page. 1.6.8 takes 2-3 seconds.

Laisvunas06:58 on 12.30.2009

Two things I dislike in EE 2.0:

1) Usability of the CP in 2.0 is worse than in 1.6.x.

2) the hooks that allow to modify CP are removed from 2.0 for some incomprehensible reasons.

Adam Khan14:11 on 01.02.2010

I still can’t bear the thought of “Content” being a menu item that I have to navigate through in order to edit or publish entries.

meh22:30 on 01.03.2010

Had high expectations I guess :( It is buggy and the cp interface is not much better than 1.6.x.

Travis Smith22:16 on 01.04.2010

Zend isn’t a dead horse if it’s something new people stumble over every day, is it? It’s more like a sick horse that smells and doesn’t carry people very far.

bjorn00:41 on 01.05.2010

Agreed. What I meant was it is a dead horse in this thread.

No doubt, EllisLab should def. do a better job of informing about the fact that the Zend Optimizer only applies to the trial.

Ryan02:50 on 01.05.2010

Just to chime-in, I wasn’t ever confused about Zend Optimizer being for the trial only. My complaint remains, if the trial is a new users only entry point and it requires Zend Optimizer then I believe they are going to lose many potential customers. Especially with the amount of ‘good’ free alternatives.

I personally love EE and think most other people would too, why complicate potential new customers with the possibility immediate hurdles? Had the 2.0 trial been my first experience and Zend gave me troubles, I would have just said “eff this”. Ellis Labs would stand to lose out on about 5 or more licenses I’d likely purchase within a year for our clients. Multiply that experience and it’s costly.

Absolutely baffling imo.

Paul00:10 on 01.19.2010

Got to concur on the negative Zend points - I’ve been trying to set up a trial version to see if it’s suitable for a project I’ve got on, but I’m in a catch-22 situation as my current host don’t have Zend installed and so I can’t even add custom fields.

Seems like EllisLab are asking me to shell out $299 to give it a proper test. I’m keen to see some of the new features;  as part of the EE community I’m one of the people that’s been talking about this product for about 2 years! But I already know how that 1.6.8 will handle what I need to do, whereas I don’t know if 2.0 can (without current support for certain add-ons).

Very frustrating, but I can’t really convert yet, and I can’t even run a test to see it in action. After all this time I’m disappointed that EllisLab have chosen this way of trialling the beta.
