On Tuesday March 13th, the Buckeye State is going to host an EE meetup in Columbus. The gathering will take place at 7 PM at Gordon Biersch Brewery. If sipping some beer and chatting EE with fellow community members isn’t enough to entice you to attend, maybe the hundreds of dollars in free add-ons will!
Come and mingle with some of the brightest minds in Ohio, at least those who have chosen to work with ExpressionEngine as their CMS of choice! There will be hundreds of dollars in addon giveaways from the kinds folks at Dev Demon, EE Harbor, Mithra62, and Put Your Lights On.
Fortunately, it’s going to be fun and sponsored by a bunch of great EE community companies (like my very own Mijingo). Unfortunately, the attendance list has already reached capacity. There might be a chance that they open it up again so stay tuned to We Are Paper Tiger twitter feed for announcements and be sure to add your name to the waitlist.
Learn how you can use EE to build dynamic websites without knowing how to program! Marcus Neto (@marcusneto) is driving here from Alabama to introduce us to this awesome content management system. He’s the Director of Enterprise Services at EllisLab (they created Expression Engine).
On the surface this may not seem like a big deal. But members of local web professional groups like the one Marcus is visiting would probably (and surely already do) choose tools like WordPress instead of ExpressionEngine. I see it as an important step to help grow the community and number of people that use ExpressionEngine. If it were up to me, Marcus would spend 2012 on an airplane (sorry, Marcus), traveling to speak and evangelize at dozens of web meetups across the country (and world). Only so many people follow the #eecms hashtag or search around for alternatives.
Ben Parizek will be presenting this month on customizing EE.
1) how to customize the default EE install at the file level, and how to manage settings at the file level
2) a variety of techniques to customize the control panel to create a better user experience for your clients. The first part will be more focused at developers but hopefully give some designers insight into how EE works. And the second part will be more focused on designers and making the client experience all it can be.
Tis the season for ExpressionEngine meetups. Here are a couple of more that have popped up recently. If you are planning an EE meetup, please get in touch so I can make sure to include it in a future posting.
Salt Lake City Meetup
Join Mike Boyink for a meetup at the Squatters Pub and Brew in Salt Lake City. The meetup takes place this week (tomorrow!) May 31st at 6:30 PM.
John Henry Donovan is coordinating the first Irish meetup. The event takes place on Thursday June 9th (next week) at 8 PM. It’s a safe bet that beer will be involved. Help John Henry plan by signing up on the meetup page.
This meetup group doesn’t yet have an event scheduled (it’s only a few days old) but if you’re in the San Diego area and want to hang out with others in the EE community, join the group. Here’s a description of the group:
As you might imagine from our group name our members are based throughout San Diego county. If you are new to the cms world you might consider joining our group and learning why EE might be a great fit for you and your business. If an you are an agency or company looking to learn more about this great CMS and want to meet the people in your area who can help you do just that then please feel free to join our group. If you’re an EE beginner or a skilled #eecms veteran you belong here. Everyone is welcome!
My former (as of, um, today) state of residence is holding an ExpressionEngine meetup in Charlotte. The Charlotte ExpressionEngine Meetup takes place on Tuesday June 21st at 6 PM.
If you’re in the Charlotte area you should make time and help make this a great meetup.
Last week a group of EE users got together in LA for the ExpressionEngine meetup. They had a special guest, too: EllisLab CEO Leslie Camacho. From the BrilliantRetail blog:
The event was capped off with a message from EllisLab, Inc. CEO Leslie Camacho (@knight777). Leslie spoke about his vision in this new roll as CEO and about the direction of ExpressionEngine’s future. We then held a question and answer period where he listened to and responded to a number inquires from the attendees.
This Thursday at 7 PM a group of awesome ExpressionEngine peeps will be meeting up in Los Angeles to do a little show and tell of EE sites they’ve built. The meetup takes place at Coloft in Santa Monica, is hosted by Mr Kelly Sims and sponsored by the folks at BrilliantRetail.
During the Train-ee Raising ExpressionEngine class, there is aPhoenix ExpressionEngine Meetup scheduled at the SunUp Brewing Company. If you’re in the area, join the group and talk shop with fellow EE users, like Mike Boyink and Erik Reagan.
At the BostonEErs meetup (Boston’s ExpressionEngine meetup group) this past week, they gave a presentation on the basics of performance tuning your EE website. Ruthie BenDor emailed to let me know about the presentation and said that it “[m]ight be useful for folks running EE sites under small or medium loads who want to make sure their sites don’t slow to a crawl.”
On September 21, 2010 a group of EE users in the Washington, DC area (known as the “DCeers”) is having an event to show a screening of some of the videos from EECI 2010 in San Francisco.
If you didn’t make it to the last EE conference in San Francisco, come out for an evening of socializing and learning at one of the regions leading agencies using EE.
Learn more about it at the DCeers meetup page and you can vote for the videos you’d like to see.
On September 2nd three of the EllisLab team will be in Seattle and they want to hang out! From 7-9pm at the Rock Bottom Brewery, you can join the crew and get all nerdy about EE or ask them when EE 2 is coming out they’re going to buy WordPress and sudo rm -R it.
Or you can just have a beer and enjoy yourself. Either way, if you’re in the Seattle area please consider joining them!
During the first Meetup the idea of “opening the books” and sharing our work in EE was discussed. We now have our first volunteer for what will certainly be a lively discussion and learning experience for all.
Eryan Cobham of Cobwebs Consulting will be subjecting himself to a “code review” by the group for a site he is currently building using EE, and facilitating a discussion on the proper way to do accomplish certain functions in EE. Some topics may include: using extensions, URL segments, and any other questions that people may interest people.
