New EE Store Will Use BrilliantRetail

In the last couple of years we’ve seen a lot of movement in the e-commerce space for ExpressionEngine. It used to be that you had to use a solution that wasn’t exactly a good fit…but it worked. We now have Cartthrob, BrilliantRetail and others.

In a big win for Brilliant2, EllisLab is switching to their BrilliantRetail software for their store. They hope to launch the new store before EECI, but they’re not certain if that’ll happen. From Leslie’s blog post at EllisLab.com:

We’ve been working with David and Tony from Brilliant2 to relaunch the ExpressionEngine Store on BrilliantRetail, their excellent ecommerce add-on for ExpressionEngine. They’ve been a joy to work with and we’ve given them permission to release all the custom work we commissioned into future versions of BrilliantRetail. We can’t be more specific about this until the store launches. Honestly we’re not sure if this will happen before or after EECI, but we’re doing our best to make it before.

I know what you’re thinking…why not Cartthrob? Me too.

I’m glad they haven’t just leapt at CartThrob on reputation alone.

We’ve looked at just about all the EE based carts and Brilliant Retail has some excellent features for selling downloads, licenses and support-type products.

Cartthrob is great for physical products. Neither cart can do everything for everyone, but we’ve had great support from both.

Carts are much more structured than EE as a whole so understanding the feature set as well as the support is a really important step.

I agree. It would be interesting to know why EllisLab selected Brilliant instead of CartThrob as the shopping cart for their updated store.

Having evaluated both carts extensively for our clients I’d like to hear what drove the decision of one option over the other.

CartThrob’s method of storing product / order data in EE channels provides what I would consider an infinitely flexible solution that utilizes and builds upon all of the power given to us by EE.

Having multiple shopping cart options for EE is certainly a blessing and having a good comparison of the products from EllisLab would be useful.

It might also be interesting to understand why they are changing from the current store at all?

Can we assume this means there are products in the pipeline which the current hand-spun store can’t cope with?
