After almost 4 ½ years of regular, weekly help chats, the EE Help Chat is ending on January 2, 2013.
I started the EE Help Chat even before this site existed (it was first announced on my EE Screencasts website back in September 2008). The original idea behind the help chat was to give people new to ExpressionEngine a place to get real-time help and hopefully get them over any hurdles they were facing.
As you can see from the original Help Chat page, I had a good bit of structure to the chats. As time went on, that structure wore away and the chats were a bit more freeform with the focus no longer about just me helping people but everyone helping each other.
The chat almost ran itself, with everyone welcoming new people and sticking around to answer questions. It was a positive experience for anyone that stopped in and spent an hour of their Wednesday (or Thursday, depending on your location) in the chat room.
After the birth of my daughter I took some time away from certain responsibilities like the Help Chat but it just kept going on its own. People started tweeting it and the room filled up. If I was busy and couldn’t tweet in time, someone would always jump in. It was amazing to see it become a regular routine for a group of people.
But as time went on the chat started to lose focus. Some weekly sessions still helped people but in the last year it has moved away from of its original goal set by me in 2008.
No one is at fault here. If anyone is at fault it’s me for not having the time to refocus the chat how I think it should be. Because of that I’ve decided to close the chat at the beginning of the year.
Thanks to everyone who participated, tweeted, recommended, helped out, shared knowledge, argued, joked, enjoyed, and made the chat possible since 2008. You rock.
